This section describes the Arity Business Model as it related to opportunties for Partnering with Arity. It is still rough and needs editing.
EXPRESSway can be tailored to showcase products, services and brands through our partner program and its underlying technology can be adapted to specialized uses through an OEM relationship.
Arity is pursuing partnerships with publishers to provide a premium product for them and sales entrée for us. Of the three major science information publishers, Arity is currently working with Elsevier to productize the Semantic Factory component. As Arity develops, we (and our partners using our tools) will launch additional domains for EXPRESSway. Arity has created prototypes for non-scientific domains including General Knowledge and News.
Arity will launch marketing efforts within Life Science segments. We have developed the required expertise (largely through our experience working with Pfizer) and infrastructure to support researchers who work within a variety of organizations including:
- Pharmaceuticals, biotechs, and medical device manufacturers (including discovery, safety, in-licensing, regulatory affairs, and marketing)
- Plant science and biochemical firms
- Private and government health care providers and payers (Evidence-based Medicine)
- University and industry scientists and market research firms such as Decision Resources
- Information providers such as Elsevier, Thomson, and Wolters Kluwer
- Medical research libraries and Life Science consulting firms
EXPRESSway presents an unusual abundance of revenue generation opportunities for Arity's partners. The six primary modes for revenue generation are:
1. EXPRESSway usage
2. Access to Domain Content
3. Proprietary Content Adaptation
4. Information Exhaust of Aggregated Usage Data
5. Advertising (distinct from Suggested Resources)
6. General and Custom Courses
We discuss these in more detail below.
1. EXPRESSway usage
The primary usage model that Arity will provide for EXPRESSway is multi-tenant SaaS. These arrangements call for periodic (monthly) access fees and metered use of space or other measurable quantities. We plan these price points for EXPRESSway:

no charge for "light" version limited to general knowledge
For those organizations that wish (for security reasons) to license EXPRESSway we will make available versions that are priced according to the size of the organization. The licensed price should total an estimated equivalent of SaaS pricing for the number of expected users corresponding to 24 months. In addition, annual support charges equal 18% of license cost. Consulting services for implementation and deployment will be priced based on time and materials.
EXPRESSway may be licensed for custom uses including VAR resale, OEM, and Kiosks. These opportunities will be priced according to the specific circumstances of use.
2. Access to Domain Content
Domain Content (the Conceptual Structures maintained by EXPRESSway for a given domain) is priced separately. Domain content may be created by Arity or by third parties including information publishers such as Elsevier, Thomson, and Wolters Kluwer.
Reference Knowledge consists of one or more ontologies that encode facts, conceptual relationships, and references to other content. Pricing may need to reflect license fees due to third parties development or included content. Under the SaaS model, access to specialized Reference Knowledge is charged monthly.
Directed Search Strategies include Questions, Advice and Targeted Resources (including specifications of how to synthesize queries or searches to most effectively use those resources). While not as elaborate as Reference Knowledge, a well structured set of Directed Search Strategies can be quite valuable because it may encode many subtle aspects of a particular workflow. Typically, access to a set of Directed Search Strategies incurs a one-time license fee. Publishers can package Directed Search Strategies to create demand for their products and services.
Suggested Resources are provided to users of EXPRESSway generally at no cost to the user. However, these point users to third party sites that may charge for use, products, and services. The relationships that are established between Arity and these third parties will call for some form of payment to Arity of a percentage or fee based on traffic or purchases. Promotions that highlight particular Resources can be highly targeted to particular audiences
Notebooks are generally generated by users and may be freely shared with others. Arity and others may offer Notebooks that have been populated with content. Arity will provide a marketplace for these and will take an advertising fee.
3. Proprietary Content Adaptation
One of the great advantages of EXPRESSway is that the domain Reference Knowledge available from Arity is often sufficient for users and organizations. Extensibility through Directed Search Strategies allows an organization to access their own proprietary content simply by adding Questions, Advice, and Resource definitions as appropriate.
Some organizations may choose to create new or extend existing Reference Knowledge by adapting and incorporating their own proprietary content. The sources of this proprietary content may be documents, databases and existing lexicons and ontologies. In general, proprietary content will be merged and aligned with domain content that is licensed by Arity.
Arity will provide consulting services for this adaptation. In addition, Arity's tools, including Semantic Studio™ and LexiLink™ may be used by our partners to perform this service, and Arity will license tools and provide training and service for organizations that wish to control their adaptation process.
4. Information Exhaust of Aggregated Usage Data
Aggregated usage data (that hides personal information) will be extremely valuable to content publishers and others. EXPRESSway log raw usage data which can be extracted,
mined and sold.
5. Advertising (distinct from Suggested Resources)
Banner-style and interstitial advertising will be sold for display in the freely available versions of EXPRESSway. Placement value is greatly enhanced by high quality targeting and first destination advantage.
6. General and Custom Courses
Courses centered on EXPRESSway that promote Arity and our insights about Investigations, Knowledge Management, Change Management, and other topics will be offered online and in person. These courses are an important form of demand generation and will be priced according to the particular situation where they will be presented.
