The power of the unaided mind is highly overrated. Without external aids, memory, thought, and reasoning are all constrained. But human intelligence is highly flexible and adaptive, superb at inventing procedures and objects that overcome its own limits. The real powers come from devising external aids that enhance cognitive abilities. How have we increased memory, thought, and reasoning? By the inventions of external aids: It is things that make us smart.

The short video below is a walk-through of EXPRESSway being used to investigate the safety characteristics of a drug.
Drug safety may in part be inferred by thinking about analogous drugs - in particular, those drugs that may affect the same "target" (most usually a protein) in the body and those drugs that may use some other mechanism but treat the same disease (also known as an "indication").
A template that describes a general approach to drug safety investigation is used here. It provides a starting place for organizing the investigation. The most important things expressed within a template are:
- The kinds of things that are expected to be placed within a notebook such as "drugs", "diseases/indications", "targets/proteins", and "safety concerns";
- The questions that usually would be answered about specific instances ("subjects") of each kind of things;
- The internal resources that might be able to answer questions;
- The ways that subjects being added to a notebook might suggest additional subjects; and
- Advice and suggested Web sites, databases, and document respositories that contain resources.
EXPRESSway additionally guides an investigation by identifying experts, notebooks, and other collaborative resources.
Demonstrated in the video is how quickly you can initiate an investigation and draw together a large amount of information that otherwise might take hours or days to gather. We have not shown is how easy it is to continue to edit, deepen, and publish notebooks as the investigation proceeds - this is just as impressive!
We will be posting additional walk-through videos in the near future.
