Arity's Custom Solutions Methodology
Arity has developed a solutions methodology that can be applied whenever new application domains are to be tackled.
Below is a brief outline of how Arity can improve your research environment in a multi-phase process.
In the Survey Phase we interview your star performers, information technologists, and library scientists to better understand the specific goals, best practices, key investigative questions, work stages/products, and desired collaboration patterns of their work.
In the Focus Phase, we incorporate and tune relevant vocabularies and ontologies to the tasks at hand. We work with your IT and library groups to connect key investigative questions to the most appropriate data stores and resources. We then run our information processing over a sample set of documents and other resources for your review.
In the Implementation Phase, we install robust Web Services, fully process all relevant content, provide tools and API’s for your continued development, and train your administrators so that you are able to maintain, update and refresh content.
The three implementation Phases are organized into six parallel tracks of activities:
- Building & Refining Appropriate Vocabulary and Ontology
- Information Extraction
- Directed Search
- Collaboration
- API’s
- Training
Methodological Tracks
1. Building & Refining Appropriate Vocabulary and Ontology
Our semantic products operate using vocabularies, facts, and concept relationships. The more specific these vocabularies are to the tasks at hand (i.e., oncology research versus dermatology research, etc) the better all the tools operate
Survey
- Interview Information Technologists and Library Scientists
Focus
- Find public domain vocabularies and ontologies
- Identify internal vocabularies and ontologies
- Incorporate the above into LexiLink (part of the Semantic Studio) using Semantic Extract Transform and Load.
Implementation
- Refine ontologies to best match the actual production use of researchers.
2. Information Extraction
Selection of data stores for preprocessing and auto-processing of new resources makes semantic search most effective and builds the active knowledge base.
Survey
- Identify document sources and prioritize based on value of information contribution
- Analyze structure of most critical document types for high value sections and context clues.
- Determine update frequency
Focus
- Develop best information extraction algorithms.
- Develop taxonomies required for extraction.
- Process sample data set through Semantic Factory for review.
Implementation
- Process all appropriate data sources
- Install services to handle periodic source updates
3. Directed Search
Strategic problem solving is a key feature of EXPRESSway. The best implementation of this requires building connections between critical question sets and most appropriate resources for answering those questions. Once the system is up and running, some of this happens through machine learning techniques, but getting it started requires some up-front consulting and discussions with your internal experts.
Survey
- Interview star performers and library scientists to identify the investigative goals & outputs, key investigative questions and best resources for answering those questions.
Focus
- Create Directed Search connections for EXPRESSway;
Implementation
- Train star performers to add or update directed searches
4. Collaboration
At what point should one’s work become available for which others to view?
Survey
- Interview leadership and end users to determine collaboration style and requirements
Focus
- Determine workflow model and experience matrix.
Implementation
- Incorporate work groups and experience data.
5. API’s
EXPRESSway can connect to data in a number of ways: loading into our ontologies, letting users upload, connecting to enterprise databases (through Lucene) or local sources (through Google Desktop).
Survey
- Interview Informatics and IT representatives.
Focus
- Develop API’s to internal and external DB’s, sites and Systems
Implementation
- Provide testing, documentation, and training.
6. Training
Training is recommended for both Administrators and Users.
Survey
- Select lead end users to be product/process champions.
Focus
- Modify approach as needed.
Implementation
- Provide workshop to administrator(s).
- Provide workshop to vocabulary/ontology contributors.
- Introduce EXPRESSway to Champions.
Solutions Area Overview
Industry, Government and Academic Organizations improve productivity and cut costs with EXPRESSway, often dramatically. Some use cases are:
Life-Sciences Industry (Healthcare/Pharma/Life Science, Market Research, Publishing)
- Share drug or gene discovery and safety strategies/results across international organizations;
- Provide value-add to content sources through collective intelligence work flow tool;
- Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM)
Government (3-Letter Agencies, Cabinet-level Departments)
- Merge data resources and cluster information to create effective briefing books and dossiers;
- Reduce time to search results through better concept disambiguation and similarity algorithms.
Academic (Post-Secondary)
- Provide new collaborative /group project opportunities and extend learning options;
- Provide faculty access to student research notebooks.
